Star Anise

Star ainse is a star-shaped, reddish brown pod that contains a pea-size seed in each of its five to eight petals. The distinctive licorice taste of the star ainse with a sweet undertone. Best when used as an accent flavor as a single point from a star anise can add layers of complex flavor and aroma which makes it a favorite secret ingredient. This exoctic spice can be used whole or in part with the same result. Star Anise works well in baked goods, desserts, sauces, soups, stews and with red meats. It works well in combination with cassia cinnamon, chili powder, coriander, fennel, garlic, ginger, lemon grass and Sichuan peppercorns.
